Speeches 1956-1988
Speeches are arranged chronologically by the date the speech was given from 1956 through 1988. Files also contain notes, drafts and final copies of speeches given at award ceremonies, commencements, and as keynote addresses in addition to introductions and remarks made by Mr. Rodino at events and statements issued to be read at events he could not attend. Some files include correspondence, photographs, programs, and other materials related to the event. For related materials, see the Trips and Invitations files, both in the Personal Series. An index to the speeches from 1974 to 1976 called Speech File: Topics and Sub-Topics provides reference access to the speeches. Subjects noted include: alcoholism, nuclear age, Bill of Rights, environment, inflation, lessons of the impeachment inquiry, the responsibilities of legislators, technology, unemployment, veterans and voting rights, among others. |

Press Releases 1949-1988
The Press Releases are arranged by year of Congress running from 1949 through 1988. Press releases and statements to the press, which are also included in this sub-series, were generated by staff of Mr. Rodino’s congressional office. From 1949 to 1986, the press releases are filed in bulk by calendar year in which the release was created. From 1987 to 1988, the Press Secretary created individual folders for each press release. This format was retained since many of the files contained background and supplemental information used in creating the release, including notes and correspondence. Also included in this series are Master Press Releases for the years 1958 to 1971 and 1980. These contain the date and title of releases in comprehensive lists by year. |

Newsletters 1967-1988
Newsletters are arranged chronologically by year from 1967 through 1988. Mr. Rodino maintained contact with his constituents through newsletters mailed to households in the district. This was a forum for Mr. Rodino to share information about legislation on which he was working and his activities as representative of the 10th District, as well as address concerns of his constituents on the federal and local levels and highlight the achievements of individuals in the district. The newsletter was also a vehicle by which Rodino informed his constituents of tax tips and government services available to them. |
From 1967 to 1974, the title of the newsletter was Capitol Letter. In 1975 the name changed to Rodino Reports, which it remained until Mr. Rodino left office in 1988. A set publication schedule for either form of the newsletter is not apparent. Earlier editions of Capitol Letter were distributed almost monthly, with some gaps occurring, and in some cases two editions issued in a single month. Editions of Rodino Reports occur significantly less frequently. Some folders containing the Rodino Reports include draft forms of the edition and supporting materials for the content. |

Rodino Talks to the People November 12, 1975 - March 22, 1981
Rodino Talks to the People was a radio show in which Mr. Rodino addressed concerns of his constituents and major issues of the day. Prior to the 1978 election, the show was taped every two weeks and aired on WNJR every Sunday at 2 p.m. It was cancelled prior to the 1978 election because FCC “equal time” provisions would have presented difficulties for the radio station. The bi-weekly radio program featuring discussion on a current issue demanding attention in Washington and Newark between Mr. Rodino and a guest who had a particular interest in that issue, either on the local or federal level. Mr. Rodino contacted Bill Franklin at WNJR in February 1979 to discuss resuming the broadcasts. Volume 2 of the show began in March 1981. This sub-series covers episodes from November 12, 1975 to May 25, 1978, and Volume 2 from March 22, 1981 to July 23, 1985, though neither run of dates is believed to be complete. Files include the radio script for the program which contains the introduction of the guest and in some instances, the questions prepared. Some files, particularly for episodes in Volume 2 of the program, contain supplemental information used in preparation for the discussion. These materials include press releases, letters, bill prints, memos, notes, articles, curriculum vitae, and talking points. The Audio-Visual series contains the reel-to-reel audio and audiocassette recordings of the show. |
